The Carlton Trunk & Tent Show Will Be Here April 21

Mark your calendars. On Thursday April 21 the Trunk and Tent Show will be rolling into town, sponsored by Carlton Bike Rental & Repair. Representatives from Framed Bike will be on hand with their latest and greatest biking gear. In addition the Louis Garneau Clothing Company will be showing samples of their complete spring line of hiking, biking and running apparel.

According to Joelene Steffens, president of Carlton Bike Rental & Repair, these kinds of events are popping up all around the country, creating experiences that bring both beginner and lifetime bicycle enthusiasts together. "This is a great opportunity to get advice from knowledgeable professionals on biking safety and the best gear for your biking or hiking needs," said Steffens.

Next week Carlton Bike Rental will have the latest 2016 GT Bikes on display as well as refreshments. There will also be drawings for prizes every 20 minutes throughout the afternoon and evening.

Carlton is an ideal kickoff point for Minnesota's famous bike trail network. For this reason there will also be reps from Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores (COGGS), a chapter of the International Mountain Bicycling Association. Yes, we not only have paved trails for family outings but an astonishing network of mountain biking trails for serious adventurers.

This is more than a biking occasion. There will be representatives from Swiftwater Adventures, local pros with 50 years of experience guiding whitewater rafting and kayaking here on the St. Louis River as well as reps from the 50-mile Minnesota Voyageur Ultra Marathon and the Eugene Curnow Trail Marathon Race giving away free passes. Jay Cooke Park manager Lisa Angelos will be on hand to answer questions about the park and The Streetcar will contribute by grilling eats and offering libations via a cash bar.

Spring Has Sprung -- Bike Season Is In The Air

“Bicycles are the indicator species of a community, like shellfish in a bay.” ~ P. Martin Scott

Last Sunday was officially the first day of spring, but Spring really hasn't begun till you've gone out for a ride on your bike. We have some beautiful scenery out here. Why only engage it through a windshield?

A lot of people who own bikes really don't do much with them because when spring comes their tires are flat. It's just one more thing to deal with.

Here at Carlton Bike Rental that's one thing you won't have to worry about. We'll also show you where the trails are and you can even get some treats here when you're through.

Now that spring has sprung, stop by the shop to say hi, and see what's new.  We have a lot to share.

Happy trails!

Sunny Saturday Means It's Time To Put Air In Your Tires

It's 50 degrees here in Carlton today, a pretty good sign that spring is just around the corner. That means it's time to put air in your tires and find your gear because biking season is here.

Not everyone waits for spring to go biking though. We have great "fat tire" bikes that will take you where you want to go no matter what the weather. Some people, like Jordan Redding of Fort Wayne, IN, see biking as more than just a means of transportation. Jordan is riding her bike across the continent to make a point about homelessness. You can learn more about her story here. And Jordan, just a quick shout out to say that Northern Minnesota is a beautiful part of the world. We have hundreds of miles of bike trails wending through innumerable scenic landscapes and parks.

It's so nice to see the sun here. Hope you will visit with us soon.

A Reminder from Carlton Bike Rental

Biking can take you 'round the world. We invite you to start in our little corner at Hobo Junction...

Only A Hobo

Carlton has a great history. Its proximity to everything luscious here in the North Country is well known. Less known is its local hobo communities that resided here during America's "hard times" era preceding World War II. As we invest time and money in resuscitating our community and its rich heritage we don't want to forget those hard times that descended on so many in our region.

Bob Dylan has recorded many songs that show his understanding and empathy for down and out people on the fringe. Here at Carlton Bike Rental we like to think of ourselves as Hobo Junction, an intersection of past hardship and future dreams for life's weary but hopeful travelers.

Wherever you're at in life's journey, visit us and have your spirits lifted by the art, the companionship and something to quench your thirst as you travel your dusty road or wait for the next train.

What is it about a lament like "Only A Hobo" by Dylan that so moves us? I suspect it's because in a world such as ours we've all known a measure of sorrow and felt a sense of isolation, aloneness. Well, if you need an escape, drop in for a visit and sip some coffee with us. Wherever you come from you're welcome here. And for a real escape from whatever ails you, take a trip on the Munger Trail... Let the beauty there fill your lungs, your heart and your soul. You will remember again why life is so worth living.

Biking in the News

No, did not say "Biking in the Nude." We said "Biking in the News." If you have your eyes open you'll see plenty is being written about biking these day. In today's news a 20-year old riding his bike across the U.S. stopped at a Subway in Decorah, Iowa on his way from Oregon to Florida. Good bit of progress being made there.

Another story is about a man who accidentally shot himself, but told the police he was shot by a gang. We recommend keeping your pistols unloaded when riding in these parts. Some of our bike trails, as beautiful as they are, are a bit off the beaten path.

There are quite a few stories this week about mountain biking. Whether it's the Mojave or the North Shore, mountain biking is a great diversion from your usual nine to five. Then again, we recommend all kinds of riding for clearing your head from the gronk and slush that fills it many of our days.

Get some exercise this weekend. Drop in, rent a bike and hit the trail. We've got everything you'll need.
