Only A Hobo

Carlton has a great history. Its proximity to everything luscious here in the North Country is well known. Less known is its local hobo communities that resided here during America's "hard times" era preceding World War II. As we invest time and money in resuscitating our community and its rich heritage we don't want to forget those hard times that descended on so many in our region.

Bob Dylan has recorded many songs that show his understanding and empathy for down and out people on the fringe. Here at Carlton Bike Rental we like to think of ourselves as Hobo Junction, an intersection of past hardship and future dreams for life's weary but hopeful travelers.

Wherever you're at in life's journey, visit us and have your spirits lifted by the art, the companionship and something to quench your thirst as you travel your dusty road or wait for the next train.

What is it about a lament like "Only A Hobo" by Dylan that so moves us? I suspect it's because in a world such as ours we've all known a measure of sorrow and felt a sense of isolation, aloneness. Well, if you need an escape, drop in for a visit and sip some coffee with us. Wherever you come from you're welcome here. And for a real escape from whatever ails you, take a trip on the Munger Trail... Let the beauty there fill your lungs, your heart and your soul. You will remember again why life is so worth living.

Biking in the News

No, did not say "Biking in the Nude." We said "Biking in the News." If you have your eyes open you'll see plenty is being written about biking these day. In today's news a 20-year old riding his bike across the U.S. stopped at a Subway in Decorah, Iowa on his way from Oregon to Florida. Good bit of progress being made there.

Another story is about a man who accidentally shot himself, but told the police he was shot by a gang. We recommend keeping your pistols unloaded when riding in these parts. Some of our bike trails, as beautiful as they are, are a bit off the beaten path.

There are quite a few stories this week about mountain biking. Whether it's the Mojave or the North Shore, mountain biking is a great diversion from your usual nine to five. Then again, we recommend all kinds of riding for clearing your head from the gronk and slush that fills it many of our days.

Get some exercise this weekend. Drop in, rent a bike and hit the trail. We've got everything you'll need.

Riding Like the Wind

Here's a painting by local artist Ed Newman which he recently painted and promised to share with us. It's called Riding Like the Wind.

There are all kinds of bikes these days, for all varieties of riding. We've got bikes here for family outings and bikes for tearing down the trail. Of course we ask you to be respectful of the other riders you encounter when you're rippin' it.

Hope your summer's been a good one. And if you're in the neighborhood, do stop in to say hello. You'll be glad you did.

Biking Can Turn Your Life Around

Jonathan Simmons, a guest columnist at boston.com, shared a story about the healing power of bicycles. The article shines a spotlight on Jimmy Pereira, whose life was turned around by biking.

Jimmy Pereira believes in the healing power of the bicycle.

"Bikes are good for your health, good for your community, and good for your wallet,” he said. “I know they're not the answer to every problem, but they are a way towards a better tomorrow."

The article details Pereira's descent into crime and how biking became a part of his return to a productive life. Check it out here.

Jonathan Simmons is the author of “Here For The Ride: A Tale of Obsession on Two Wheels.” He is also a member of MassBike.

Dylan Season

Don't Look Back, by Ed Newman.
In case you haven't heard, Bob Dylan is in his 25th year of the Never Ending Tour, and will be making a stop July 9 at Bayfront Park in Duluth, which is only a hop skip and a jump from here. Since it's tourist season in Duluth, you may want to stay at a more exotic location on the outskirts, and we recommend the Oldenburg House, a bed and breakfast walking distance from our front door.

The original owner was instrumental in the development of Jay Cooke State Park, and the current owners are equally special. While your here for the Dylan season, make sure you check out the art at our store. We are currently representing some work by Ed Newman, who has produced a number of unique Dylan portraits, some of which are available as giclee prints.

Meantime, life goes on all around you. Take some time to soak it in.

Gearing Up For Spring

OK, by now you've noticed we're having a long winter. We have no control over that. But we can certainly begin stirring the pot as regards things to do when Big Sun begins to beam with serious springtime force.

In a world of virtual everything, it really is nice to know there are places and spaces where you can have a real breeze flowing through your hair as you zip along on the real Munger Trail.

We'd like to remind you once again that we not only rent bikes, but we rent "discs" for the local Disc Golf Course a mile from our little town on the edge of Paradise. There's actually plenty more to do here than meets the eye as CBR also has an art gallery along with art lessons from time to time, courtesy Art Dimensions, Joelene Steffens framing business. Art Dimensions is just one of many A-Team businesses here. As time permits we'd also like to tell you more about the Oldenburg House, a bed and breakfast that  is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This remarkably beautiful place is but walking distance from our spot on the map, or a three minute bike-hike.

In fact this Thursday, May 9, the Oldenburg House will be hosting an intimate piano concert featuring premiere pianist Eric Himy. To learn more about this event and purchase tickets, click here.

Trivia: Did you know that Jay Cooke State Park was created by land donated to the State of Minnesota by the Oldenburgs?

We still more wonders nearby including hiking trails, kayaking, fishing, whitewater rafting and more. Visit soon and live a little! Minnesota starts here.

The Disc Golf Course a mile away is good exercise and lots of fun.
Thank you, Jesse, for these photos that so remind us it's time for spring.

We'd Like To Get To Know You

We're located in Carlton, Minnesota. In case you didn't know, Minnesota starts here. And if you're in the neighborhood we certainly hope you'll stop on by. We not only have bikes for rent, we have cold drinks, ice cream and snacks for the end of your ride. Even if you're not renting one of our own bikes, you can still stop in for the snacks.

We also have connections with a lot of local artists and craftspersons whose work we're proud to represent. We may even have the ability to twist an arm and swing a deal for you.

One thing we have no control over, however, is the weather. Don't give up on us just because we're still getting buried in blankets of snow. It'll all be over soon, so set your gear by the door and be ready. We're as eager for spring as you are.

Spring is in the air at Carlton Bike Rental & Repair

The sun is now shining at a bit higher angle in the sky and the days are getting longer. Nice. This is just a reminder that even though it's going to be cold tonight, our blessed spring is on the doorstep and bike season with it. Keep us in mind when you get the urge to get out on the trails.
